Ironic to say the least....

Ricky Gervais has launched his second consecutive box office bomb as The Invention of Lying (Warner Bros) only mustered $2.2M or so to start the 3-day. The comedy should finish #5 with approximately $6.5M for the weekend. …

[B]ut the biggest disappointment of the weekend is Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story(Overture). After a $57K per theatre average on 4 screens last weekend, the picture broke to a wider 962 locations with terrible results. The “documentary” only sold an estimated $1.3M in tickets to start the weekend, and it will finish at about $3.9M for a PTA of less than $4,000. That soft opening will almost certainly make Capitalism Moore’s weakest-grossing movie since 2002’s Bowling for Columbine ($21.5M domestic gross).

I have recently begun seeing all sorts of Facebook friends gushing about Michael Moore's latest mockumentary, Capitalsm; A Love Story. Some of these people who are just LOVING the movie and it's message are wealthy or rather, sleeping with or married to someone who's wealthy. They clearly have no Earthly idea how people get wealthy!

Tell me again; Why are we spending billions to fund this corrupt dog and pony show? These trailers are for a wonderful movie coming out called U.N. Me.

The Incredible Hunk

On Father's Day, we went to the movies to see The Incredible Hulk, although since I think Edward Norton is ridiculously adorable, I like to call it, The Incredible Hunk! I like Edward Norton, in part, because he is sort of ordinary looking and he LOOKS like he is sensitive and deep and a really good kisser. He is also a really good actor but my favorite thing about him as an actor is that on the rare occasion I have seen him interviewed, he has not volunteered a single political opinion. Maybe he has and I just missed it. Fine by me. Ignorance truly is bliss!  In any event, the movie rocked! I won't spoil any of it for you as far as the plot goes but I will say the effects were amazing and it was really, really LOUD! The movie made me jump about 10 times! Yikes, seriously. I was worn out afterwards and I sure could have used a Valium. When I am going to the movies with my monkeys, I always opt for the ones they would enjoy. It has been many moons since I chose a movie with me in mind, for us to see. I remember it exactly. The movie was Neverland, the movie about the man who authored Peter Pan. He was played by Johnny Depp and the movie was wonderful.  The problem was that my children HATE movies that get sad and Neverland gets very, very sad. I remember Ivan declaring afterwards that he would never forgive me for taking him to that movie.  Since then, when I choose a movie, the boys always ask if people will die in it. Ironically, in the action movies the boys like, LOTS of people usually die but instead of it being sad and tragic, the deaths are usually more cartoony and rarely are the dearly departed any of the lead characters. I guess that makes it infinitely more palatable for the monkeys.

My favorite moment in the entire movie is when you see Edward Norton, hiding behind a dumpster and in his face you can see the profound heartbreak and loss and pain and longing he is feeling. The expression on his face could break you heart, truly. That scene is the reason I would pay money to watch Edward Norton in ANY movie.  Especially one where he plays a sensitive, loving, brilliant scientist.

Atonement

The other day my friend and I went to the movies, to see Atonement.  On our way in we passed in front of a giant cardboard display of the stars of the movie.  I commented to my friend that the male lead, whose name I do not know, does nothing for me.  Nothing.  Nope, don't even think he is handsome.  Who did the casting for this movie anyway?  Two hours later, after watching this tragic and gut-wrenching movie, I felt as though I couldn't take another breath without aforementioned actor in my life!  Okay, I'm exagerrating but not by much.  It just speaks to how little physical beauty means to a woman.  Women are moved by something far more compelling and far less superficial than beauty.  Something so important, it could be argued that life is not worth living without it.  What is it?  I will let you figure that out for yourselves.  As for the movie, it was wonderful; the cinematography was stunning and it was well written and acted.  I would have to give the film four stars and the star four kisses!
